Will it be cool to replace your house keys with smart phones? If you said yes then a startup called August is already on its way to help you live the dream. This company has been watching over the internet buzz about everyday objects like the Lights, Security systems, Garage doors etc. Becoming accessible and getting controlled over the internet these days. Nest has been the most popular company in space after making the Thermostat and smoke detector.
Computerizing all pain points one may have at home is the aim. Though this might not sound potential as every household are not powered by smart phones yet its benefits seem to put these cons behind. This is probably what every company around the world has been looking for.
August has lately been into namesake smart lock though they may expand the project. There have been very limited quantities of these locks for the past year. One may buy this for around $250 from any apple store and can also use the august website.
For those who want to know how it works – Having a standard dead bolt means you will not need a trained locksmith to install this lock. You will only have to know how to operate a screw driver and the process for installation should not take you more than a couple of minutes. The lock will simply replace the knob on the inside of the door that you have usually used to lock up. You have to unscrew the knob, screw in the mounting board and the lock snaps on now. In case, you still feel confused you may be assisted by a professional provided by the August Company in order to help you with the installation.
The locks have basically been designed in order to easily screw into any of the standard deadbolt locks. From outside one may not be able to observe any change. You may not have to replace the key hole. These locks interact via Bluetooth with an app installed in your phone. You can program the lock manually and unlock it while you reach your door and lock it back when you leave. Assigning keys to other people is also possible with this app and this helps in keeping a track of who enters and exits the house.
The August lock is powered by set of AA batteries and is promised to last for about a year considering normal usage. A warning is given through the app when the lock runs out of battery. There is a provision to manually twist the lock from inside and we can also use a key to enter. Hence one may not have to fear being locked out of the house.
The company has also introduced various other products like Jambox Bluetooth speaker and UP fitness tracker. It is an aluminum cylinder and is available in 4 different colors – silver, red, gray and champagne and has a front plate which pops off so that one can change the battery without having to remove the device from the door.
Though this seems to look like a huge success from outside, this is not what the company has been aiming for and working for all this while. The co-founder of the company Jason Johnson sees this as a main stream product to avoid hassle that homeowners face, but not as a stupid party prank.
Hating keys is a common think with people getting locked outside houses. Having a solution to this problem will probably be the most invited innovation in the market and the product will have a bigger scope than the picture imagined. So all you will need to remember is take your bag.
